Mardi Gras Day History
Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday is generally the day before Ash Wednesday and Lent. It is the biggest party of the year. Mardi Gras is celebrated all over the world. One of the biggest Mardi Gras Carnivals is New Orleans, Louisiana. Mardi Gras begins in January with the Twelfth Night Feast of the Epiphany. It is the time to let lose and enjoy yourself before Lent. People of all ages, wear a variety of costumes and participate in merriment. The Parades officially start the Friday before Ash Wednesday. There are floats and parades in the many parishes of New Orleans. These floats are spectacular and are produced by specific Krewes or clubs. The Krewes who ride the floats throw beads at the crowd. During Mardi Gras the object of the game is catch as many beads as possible. Mardi is French for Tuesday and Gras is French for fat. Mardi Gras or Carnival is celebrated all over the world. It is the feast before the fast. In the middle ages, villagers would slaughter a fat ox. Everyone would take part in the feast of the ox. This fatted animal represents plenty and a celebration of life. That is why music is apart of Mardi Gras as throwing beads from floats. Music is a way to communicate ones joy to God. Yes, Mardi Gras has a deep spiritual meaning.

In the United States, it was not until 1837 however, that the first Mardi Gras parade was staged. The first description of a Mardi Gras parade is of a single float in 1839 which was a crude thing, but a great success. It is reported that the float moved through the streets while the crowd roared. Mardi Gras in New Orleans is an American tradition and an exploration of Creole and Cajun culture. Next time some says Ou-allez-vous? Tell them your going to New Orleans, it's Mardi Gras.
